Colopeg

Colopeg is a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based osmotic laxative used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy, colonic surgery, or radiological examinations. Developed by Norgine, it is a high-volume (typically 4-liter) preparation consisting of macrogol 3350 combined with a balanced mixture of electrolytes, including sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. The mechanism of action involves the osmotic effect of macrogol, which binds water in the intestinal lumen, increasing stool volume and stimulating peristalsis to effectively clear the colon. The inclusion of electrolytes helps to maintain the patient's fluid and electrolyte balance during the lavage process. It is administered orally as a solution reconstituted from powder sachets.
