Overview

Colophonium, commonly known as rosin, is a natural resin obtained from the oleoresin of various species of pine (Pinus) and other coniferous trees. It is produced by heating liquid resin to vaporize the volatile terpene components (turpentine). Chemically, it consists of a complex mixture of diterpene resin acids, primarily abietic acid and its derivatives like dehydroabietic acid. In medical and industrial contexts, colophonium is primarily used as a tackifying agent in adhesives, including those found in medical tapes, wound dressings, ostomy supplies, and specialized medical devices like continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps. Clinically, it is most notable as a frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis. It is a standard component of diagnostic patch test series (such as the European baseline series) used to identify patients with resin sensitivity. In some regions, it is also incorporated into traditional topical "resin creams" for wound management and skin protection.
