Overview

Comarum palustre is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Rosaceae family commonly known as marsh cinquefoil. It is native to wetland areas across northern Europe, Asia, and North America. Traditionally used in folk medicine—especially in Siberia and by Native American tribes—the root has been employed for its astringent properties to treat dysentery and stomach cramps. Modern herbal use includes support for digestive health and immune function[1][5][6]. Recent studies suggest pleiotropic effects including reduction of pain and symptoms in osteoarthritis (OA), improvement of lipid profiles (decreased total cholesterol/increased HDL-C), anti-inflammatory activity (reduced TNF-α/increased IL-10), antioxidant effects due to ellagitannins like agrimoniin[2][4], and potential α-glucosidase inhibition relevant for diabetes management[4]. The main active constituents are ellagitannins such as agrimoniin; pectic polysaccharides like comaruman also contribute anti-inflammatory activity.
