Combid is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product originally developed by Smith Kline & French (now part of GSK). It consists of two primary active ingredients: prochlorperazine maleate, a phenothiazine derivative that acts as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist with antiemetic and antipsychotic properties, and isopropamide iodide, a long-acting quaternary ammonium anticholinergic that acts as a muscarinic receptor antagonist. The drug was primarily indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, where it aimed to reduce gastric secretion and motility while simultaneously addressing associated anxiety or nausea. It was famously formulated using "Spansule" technology to provide sustained release of the active ingredients. While historically significant, the prochlorperazine/isopropamide combination was discontinued in many markets, including the United States, after regulatory reviews (such as the DESI program) concluded that fixed-dose combinations must demonstrate that each component contributes to the claimed effect. Additionally, the name "Combid" is used in certain regions for a distinct combination of the antiretroviral medications lamivudine and zidovudine used to treat HIV infection.
