Combifer-T is an anti-anemic biological product developed by the Centro Nacional de Biopreparados (BioCen) in Cuba, specifically for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women. The drug is formulated as a powder for suspension and is created by combining dehydrated Trofin—a registered biological anti-anemic syrup derived from bovine blood, bee honey, and propolis—with ferrous fumarate. This unique combination provides two distinct forms of iron: heme iron (from the bovine blood component) and non-heme iron (from ferrous fumarate). These two forms are absorbed through different physiological mechanisms, which is intended to enhance overall iron absorption and reduce the gastrointestinal side effects often associated with standard iron supplementation. BioCen initiated a Phase II clinical trial in 2022 across several Havana hospitals to evaluate its efficacy and safety in pregnant women between 18-26 weeks of gestation.
