Overview

Combination nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) refers to the concurrent use of two different forms of medically approved nicotine delivery products to aid in smoking cessation. The most common regimen involves a long-acting transdermal nicotine patch, which provides a steady baseline level of nicotine throughout the day, combined with a faster-acting form such as gum, lozenge, mouth spray, inhalator (inhaler), or nasal spray. This approach is more effective than single-form NRT for helping smokers quit and is recommended for individuals who smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day. The mechanism of action involves replacing some or all of the nicotine previously obtained from tobacco with pharmaceutical-grade nicotine delivered through non-tobacco routes. This reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings by maintaining plasma nicotine levels while avoiding exposure to harmful combustion products found in tobacco smoke[2][3][4][5]. Combination NRT has demonstrated quit rates comparable to varenicline and is considered one of the most effective pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation[2].
