Overview
Combivent is a fixed-dose combination inhaler containing two bronchodilators: ipratropium bromide (an anticholinergic) and albuterol sulfate (a short-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist). It is primarily used for the prevention of bronchospasm in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Ipratropium works by blocking muscarinic receptors in airway smooth muscle to inhibit acetylcholine-mediated bronchoconstriction. Albuterol stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the airways. The combination provides greater bronchodilation than either agent alone[1][2][4][5]. Developed as an inhalation aerosol or solution for oral inhalation via metered-dose inhaler or nebulizer.
