Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Commelina communis extract is a botanical extract derived from the Asiatic dayflower (*Commelina communis*), a plant traditionally used in East Asian medicine. The extract is characterized by its multi-target pharmacological profile, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and potential anti-cancer activities. Its primary mechanism of action involves the suppression of the Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, which leads to the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and Interleukin-6 (IL-6). For its anti-diabetic effects, the extract contains iminosugar alkaloids like 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) that act as potent inhibitors of alpha-glucosidase, thereby reducing postprandial blood glucose levels. Recent systems pharmacology research has also identified its potential in treating hepatocellular carcinoma by modulating hub genes such as AKR1B10 and HMGCR. While available as a research compound from suppliers like Selleckchem, it currently lacks a formal pharmaceutical developer or clinical trial program.
