Overview

Commensal Bacteria Strains (University of Chicago) is an investigational live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of defined consortia of commensal bacterial strains. Developed by the University of Chicago's Duchossois Family Institute (DFI), the therapy is designed to treat severe liver diseases, including cirrhosis and liver failure, by addressing gut dysbiosis. The product comprises capsules containing combinations of 17 bacterial strains (with specific consortia of 8 strains used in clinical trials) intended to restore the gut microbiome's composition and metabolic function. Specifically, the therapy targets the restoration of fecal metabolite levels, such as butyrate and deoxycholic acid, which are often depleted in patients with chronic liver disease. It is manufactured in an in-house cGMP facility and is currently being evaluated in the Phase 1b MARCO (Microbiota Augmentation in Liver Disease) adaptive clinical trial to assess safety and tolerability in hospitalized patients.
