Comparator 1-Medical University of Vienna is a specific investigational mixture used as a control arm in a double-blind, randomized, crossover clinical trial (NCT01350089) conducted by the Medical University of Vienna. The study was designed to examine the effects of energy drink ingestion on perceived alcohol intoxication in healthy male volunteers. Comparator 1 consists of 46.5 g of ethanol (administered in the form of 37.5% vodka), 250 mL of carbonated water, and artificial fruit juice, resulting in a final volume of 500 mL. This mixture serves as the alcohol-only comparator to assess the baseline subjective and physiological effects of ethanol without the presence of caffeine or other energy drink components. Ethanol, the active pharmacological agent, primarily functions as a central nervous system depressant by modulating GABAergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission.
