Overview

Compound 17k is an experimental small molecule derivative of 1,3-dimethylxanthine (theophylline) currently being investigated as a dual-acting therapeutic for the management of asthma. It functions primarily as a potent inhibitor of phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE-4B), which provides anti-inflammatory effects, while also exhibiting significant bronchodilator activity that has been shown to surpass theophylline in preclinical models. Uniquely, compound 17k also demonstrates antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains associated with asthma pathogenesis. Characterized by high lipophilicity and favorable oral pharmacokinetic properties, it is considered a promising lead for the development of orally active treatments for severe or infection-linked asthma.
