Overview

Compound 4298 is a small molecule arylpiperazine-sulphonamide derivative being developed as a neuroprotective treatment for Parkinson's disease. Research conducted at the University of Hertfordshire has demonstrated that the compound significantly improves cell viability in SH-SY5Y cell models of Parkinson's disease. It appears to exert its effects by protecting against mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired protein clearance, two critical pathogenic mechanisms in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. The compound is part of a series of novel arylpiperazine-sulphonamides (patented under WO 2016/051155) designed to target the underlying disease process rather than providing only symptomatic relief.
