Compound bismuth aluminate is a pharmaceutical combination primarily used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, especially peptic ulcer disease, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, chronic superficial gastritis, hyperchlorhydria, and duodenal bulbar inflammation. The formulation typically contains bismuth aluminate as the main active ingredient and may include other components such as glycyrrhizic acid derivatives (from licorice), liquiritin, isoliquiritigenin, isoliquiritin apioside (herbal actives), and excipients like hydroxypropyl cellulose to enhance disintegration and bioavailability[4][6]. Bismuth aluminate acts locally in the stomach by neutralizing gastric acid (antacid effect) and forming a protective coating over ulcers or inflamed mucosa. It also exhibits local antipepsin activity at the site of ulcers. Inorganic bismuth compounds have mild antibacterial properties against Helicobacter pylori and are considered to have low systemic toxicity due to poor absorption[1][2]. The combination aims to reduce gastric acidity, protect mucosal surfaces from further damage by acid/pepsin diffusion, alleviate pain rapidly, promote healing of ulcers more effectively than single agents alone[6], and may provide antioxidant effects through herbal constituents[4].
