Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Compound Cantharides Capsule (also known as Compound Banmao Capsule or Fufang Banmao Jiaonang) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-based oral formulation widely used in China as an adjunctive therapy for various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer. The formulation is composed of 11 traditional Chinese medicines, with the primary active ingredient being cantharidin (derived from the Chinese blister beetle *Mylabris phalerata*), along with other herbs such as *Panax ginseng*, *Astragalus mongholicus*, *Eleutherococcus senticosus*, and bear gallbladder powder. Cantharidin acts as an inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) and protein phosphatase 1 (PP1), which induces tumor cell apoptosis, blocks G2/M cell cycle transition, and inhibits tumor cell proliferation. Additionally, the formulation has been shown to enhance immune function and inhibit HBV DNA replication in preclinical models of HCC. In clinical trials, it is often evaluated in combination with chemotherapy or other targeted/immunotherapy regimens (such as TACE combined with thalidomide and capecitabine) to improve efficacy and reduce treatment-related toxicities.
