Overview

Compound Danshen is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula primarily indicated for cardiovascular diseases. It is most commonly available as the "Compound Danshen Dripping Pill" and contains three main herbal ingredients: Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), notoginseng (Panax notoginseng), and borneol. The active pharmacodynamic substances include phenolic acids such as tanshinol and salvianolic acids, saponins from notoginseng and ginsenosides, as well as borneol. The mechanism of action involves multiple pathways including improvement of microcirculation, anti-platelet aggregation effects, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, vasodilation via calcium antagonism, and protection against ischemic injury. It has been extensively applied in China for angina pectoris, myocardial ischemia/infarction prevention or treatment, diabetic microvascular angina pectoris (as shown in clinical trials), hyperlipidemia management, acute ischemic stroke support therapy and other heart/blood vessel conditions[4][5][7]. Its use is supported by both traditional practice and modern pharmacological studies; however large-scale randomized controlled trials are still needed to fully establish efficacy by Western standards.
