Compound Diandao

Compound Diandao is a topical hospital preparation developed by the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital of Southern Medical University for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It is an optimized formulation of the classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescription "Diandao San," which traditionally consists of equal parts of *Rheum palmatum* (Rhubarb) and Sulfur. The "Compound" designation typically indicates the addition of Western antimicrobial agents, most commonly metronidazole, to enhance efficacy against anaerobic bacteria. The preparation exerts its therapeutic effects through a multi-targeted approach: sulfur provides keratolytic activity to resolve comedones and possesses mild antifungal properties; rhubarb anthraquinones (such as emodin) offer potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects; and metronidazole targets *Cutibacterium acnes* and other anaerobic organisms. It is widely used within the developing institution to manage inflammatory acne lesions and reduce sebum-related skin conditions.
