Compound electrolyte powder is an osmotic laxative primarily used for bowel preparation before medical procedures such as colonoscopy, enteroscopy, and colorectal surgery. It typically consists of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a balanced mixture of electrolytes. PEG acts by drawing and retaining water in the bowel lumen, creating an isotonic solution that softens fecal matter and induces diarrhea, thereby cleansing the colon. The electrolytes, including sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium sulfate, are included to maintain the body's fluid and electrolyte balance, preventing dehydration and electrolyte disturbances during the purgative process. Some formulations may also contain Vitamin C.
