Overview

Compound glutamine is a combination drug composed of L-glutamine, a conditionally essential amino acid, and the traditional Chinese herbal formula Si-Jun-Zi-Tang. Si-Jun-Zi-Tang consists of ginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria cocos, and licorice. This drug has been widely used in China for 23 years to treat various gastrointestinal diseases, including gastrointestinal reactions induced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. Its mechanism involves L-glutamine's role in maintaining the integrity of the mucosal epithelium and supporting nitrogen balance, thereby reducing gastrointestinal side effects. It is currently being investigated for the primary prevention of chemotherapy-induced mucositis, radiation-induced oral mucositis, and in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and radiation proctitis.
