Compound Huangdai Tablet is an oral combination medicine used primarily for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). It is also known as the Realgar-Indigo Naturalis formula (RIF) and consists of realgar (tetraarsenic tetrasulfide), Indigo naturalis (containing indirubin), root of Salvia miltiorrhiza (providing tanshinone IIA), and root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla. The main mechanism involves breaking down the cancer protein retinoic acid receptor alpha and regulating multiple molecular pathways to induce apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in APL cells. Its efficacy is considered similar to arsenic trioxide when combined with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), but it offers advantages such as lower risk of liver dysfunction, greater convenience due to oral administration, and reduced cost. Developed in China in the 1980s and approved there in 2009, it appears on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[1][2][3][8].
