Overview

Compound hypertonic salt solution refers to a sterile intravenous formulation containing a higher-than-physiological concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl), often combined with other salts such as sodium acetate. These solutions are used for rapid correction of severe hyponatremia, management of increased intracranial pressure in traumatic brain injury or cerebral edema, and volume resuscitation in critical care settings. The mechanism involves creating an osmotic gradient that draws water out of cells into the extracellular space and bloodstream, thereby increasing serum sodium levels and reducing cerebral edema. Typical formulations include 2% or 3% NaCl combined with equimolar amounts of sodium acetate in sterile water[5][8]. The exact composition may vary depending on clinical need but is always more concentrated than normal (0.9%) saline.
