Overview
Compound lactobacillus is a probiotic preparation, typically available as a capsule, that contains a combination of live lactic acid bacteria strains. [1] For example, the brand Juke (聚克) contains strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Enterococcus faecium. [2] These live microorganisms work by colonizing the gut, where they produce lactic acid. This process helps to inhibit the growth of harmful or putrefactive bacteria, thereby adjusting the balance of the intestinal microflora. [1, 6] By preventing excessive intestinal fermentation and reducing gas, it aids digestion and has an anti-diarrheal effect. [1] It is commonly used to treat functional intestinal disorders caused by an imbalance in the gut flora, such as acute and chronic diarrhea. [1, 4, 8] The capsules are often enteric-coated to protect the live bacteria from stomach acid, ensuring they reach the intestines to exert their effect. [5, 6]
