Overview

Concentrated bone marrow aspirate (cBMA) is an autologous cell-based biologic therapy being investigated by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) for the treatment and prevention of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) following revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The therapy involves the intraoperative harvest of bone marrow from the patient's iliac crest, which is then processed via centrifugation to create a concentrate rich in autologous bone marrow cells, including mesenchymal stem cells, anti-inflammatory mediators, and immune-modulating proteins. This concentrate is injected into the knee joint to reduce local inflammation and improve clinical outcomes such as pain and joint function. The study is part of the Arthritis Foundation 2023 FastOA Interventional Pilot Studies.
