Concha haliotidis is the shell of abalone (various species in the genus Haliotis), widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the name 石决明 (Shi Jue Ming). It is classified as salty and cold in nature and primarily enters the liver meridian. In TCM practice, it is used to pacify liver yang, clear liver heat, nourish liver yin, and improve vision. Common indications include symptoms associated with hyperactivity of liver yang such as dizziness and headaches; eye disorders like bloodshot eyes, blurred vision, glaucoma, conjunctivitis; and other conditions linked to excessive "liver fire" or internal wind. Modern research suggests that extracts from concha haliotidis may influence calcium channels and have antibacterial and hepatoprotective effects[4][6][8][10]. The shell contains minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphate as well as amino acids like choline and glutamic acid[10]. It is typically administered orally after being decocted or processed into powder.
