Condrosphere is an autologous chondrocyte-based cell therapy in which a patient’s own cartilage cells are isolated, expanded ex vivo, and formulated into spherical cell aggregates (chondrospheres) that are implanted into focal cartilage defects to regenerate hyaline-like cartilage in the affected joint. Developed by co.don, the product is classified in Europe as an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) and has been approved nationally in Germany under Section 4b of the German Pharmaceuticals Act while undergoing centralized Phase II/III clinical development for broader European marketing authorization for the treatment of articular cartilage defects, primarily in the knee.[2][7] The therapy relies on the biological activity of autologous chondrocytes to produce cartilage extracellular matrix and restore joint surface integrity, aiming to reduce pain and improve function in patients with symptomatic cartilage lesions.
