Overview

Conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) are a complex mixture of estrogenic compounds, primarily sodium estrone sulfate and sodium equilin sulfate, derived from the urine of pregnant mares. In the specific clinical context of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (NCT01698164), CEE is being studied at both standard (0.625 mg) and half (0.3 mg) doses in combination with progestogens—either micronized progesterone or dydrogesterone—to treat menopause syndrome. This combination therapy is designed to alleviate climacteric symptoms such as vasomotor instability (hot flashes) and vaginal atrophy while providing endometrial protection through the progestogen component. CEE acts as an agonist at estrogen receptors alpha (ER-α) and beta (ER-β), mimicking the effects of endogenous estrogens to restore hormonal balance in postmenopausal women.
