Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Conjugated Estrogen Cream, marketed under the brand name Premarin Vaginal Cream, is a local estrogen therapy containing a mixture of conjugated equine estrogens (primarily sodium estrone sulfate and sodium equilin sulfate) derived from the urine of pregnant mares. It is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, atrophic vaginitis, kraurosis vulvae, and moderate to severe dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse) associated with menopause. Conjugated estrogens act as agonists of the estrogen receptors alpha and beta, restoring vaginal tissue, reversing menopausal vaginal changes, and alleviating localized symptoms of estrogen deficiency. Originally developed by Ayerst, McKenna and Harrison (which later became part of Wyeth, now a subsidiary of Pfizer), Premarin Vaginal Cream is administered intravaginally using a calibrated applicator.
