Overview

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring fatty acid and dietary supplement being investigated for its potential antineoplastic effects in advanced solid tumors. In a clinical study led by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, CLA (specifically the Clarinol formulation) was evaluated for its ability to inhibit lipid metabolism, a process critical for the survival and proliferation of certain cancer cells. The mechanism of action involves the suppression of S14 (Spot 14) expression, a protein that plays a key role in de novo fatty acid synthesis. By blocking the uptake and production of lipids, CLA aims to starve tumor cells and inhibit their growth.
