Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) + vitamin E is a combination dietary supplement and adjuvant therapy investigated for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. CLAs are a group of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid, primarily the cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 isomers, which act as agonists for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) to modulate lipid metabolism and inflammatory cytokine production. Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from lipid peroxidation and has been shown to reduce systemic inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Clinical studies have demonstrated that co-supplementation of CLAs and vitamin E can significantly improve clinical manifestations in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis, including reductions in disease activity scores (DAS28), pain, morning stiffness, and blood pressure. It has also been evaluated for metabolic control in overweight patients with type 2 diabetes, though results in that population have been less conclusive.
