Overview

Conjugated linolenic acid (CLnA) refers to a group of positional and geometric isomers of octadecatrienoic acid (C18:3) characterized by the presence of three double bonds in a conjugated system. These isomers are mainly found in certain plant seed oils and differ from typical polyunsaturated fatty acids by having their double bonds separated by only one single bond. CLnA has been studied for its potential health benefits, including anticancer, antiobesity, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The biological activity and physiological functions of CLnA depend on the specific isomer present; different isomers may have distinct metabolic pathways and health impacts. Mechanistically, some effects are thought to be mediated through modulation of lipid metabolism, inflammation pathways, or cellular signaling processes related to disease prevention or management[6]. Research into the clinical applications and mechanisms of action for individual CLnA isomers remains ongoing.
