Consepsis is a branded dental antimicrobial solution and cavity disinfectant formulated with 2.0% chlorhexidine gluconate. Developed and manufactured by Ultradent Products, it is primarily used in restorative dentistry to disinfect tooth preparations, such as cavities and root canals, prior to the placement of final restorations. Its mechanism of action is two-fold: it provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, which reduces the risk of secondary caries and postoperative sensitivity, and it acts as an inhibitor of host-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). By inhibiting MMPs like MMP-2 and MMP-9, Consepsis prevents the enzymatic degradation of collagen fibers within the hybrid layer of adhesive restorations, thereby enhancing the long-term durability and bond strength of resin-based materials. It is available as a liquid solution and as a slurry (Consepsis Scrub) containing pumice for surface cleaning and disinfection.
