Contezolid acefosamil is a water-soluble prodrug of contezolid, an oxazolidinone-class antibacterial agent. It is designed for intravenous and oral administration and rapidly converts in vivo to the active drug, contezolid, through enzymatic processes. Contezolid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by preventing the formation of a functional 70S initiation complex, thereby acting as a protein synthesis inhibitor. It demonstrates potent activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The drug is being developed primarily for the treatment of diabetic foot infections and skin and soft tissue infections as an alternative to linezolid with potentially improved safety regarding myelosuppression and monoamine oxidase inhibition.
