Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Contizolamide is a novel, fully synthetic oxazolidinone antibacterial drug developed by Shanghai Menke Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. It is administered orally and is effective against aerobic Gram-positive bacteria, including multi-drug resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), penicillin-non-susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the formation of the functional 70S initiation complex, which is essential for bacterial protein synthesis. Approved in China in June 2021 for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections, contizolamide is designed to offer an improved safety profile compared to earlier oxazolidinones, with a reduced risk of myelosuppression and monoamine oxidase inhibition. It has also received Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) and Fast Track designations from the US FDA for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and diabetic foot infections.
