The control gel is a topical vehicle formulation developed by the State University of Maringá (Universidade Estadual de Maringá) for use as a placebo comparator in clinical trials. Specifically, it was utilized in a randomized, double-blind study evaluating the safety and efficacy of insulin-based gels for the treatment of Grade II pressure ulcers in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The formulation consists of a Carbopol 940® polymer base, purified water, propylene glycol, and preservatives (methylparaben and propylparaben), with the pH adjusted using triethanolamine. While designed as an inactive control to isolate the effects of active ingredients like insulin or insulin-cyclodextrin complexes, the gel provides a moist environment and protective barrier that may support tissue revitalization.
