Convalescent plasma is a passive immunotherapy approach involving the transfusion of plasma from individuals who have recovered from a viral infection, such as SARS-CoV-2, into patients currently battling the disease. The plasma contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies (primarily IgG and IgM) that target the viral spike protein, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and mitigating disease severity. This specific intervention is being evaluated in a Phase 2, open-label, randomized controlled trial led by Tânia Portella Costa in Southern Brazil. The study focuses on hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19 within seven days of symptom onset, comparing the efficacy and safety of high-titer convalescent plasma against the standard of care.
