Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy consisting of hyperimmune plasma collected from donors who have recovered from COVID-19. This plasma contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies specifically directed against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In the TSUNAMI (TranSfUsion of coNvaleScent plAsma for the treatment of severe pneuMonIa due to SARS-CoV2) study, a Phase 2 trial led by Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Pisana, the therapy was investigated as a passive immunotherapy for hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The mechanism of action involves the transfusion of these antibodies to neutralize viral particles, inhibit viral entry into host cells, and potentially modulate the inflammatory response in critically ill patients.
