Convalescent plasma (CP) is a biologic therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from a viral infection, in this case, COVID-19. It contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies specifically targeting the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This specific investigational treatment was evaluated in a Phase II randomized controlled trial (RCT) at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to determine its efficacy, tolerability, and optimal dosing (200ml vs 400ml) in patients with severe COVID-19. The therapy works by providing passive immunity, where the transferred antibodies neutralize the virus and help the recipient's immune system clear the infection. The trial was conducted between June 2020 and July 2021, focusing on severe cases where standard care was supplemented with CP transfusion.
