Convalescent plasma is a passive immunotherapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. It contains a diverse pool of polyclonal antibodies, including neutralizing antibodies that specifically target the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The therapy works by transferring these pre-formed antibodies to patients with early-stage or mild disease to neutralize viral particles, inhibit viral entry into host cells, and reduce the overall viral load, thereby preventing the progression to severe illness. This specific clinical program, led by Andrew Eisenberger at Columbia University, evaluates the efficacy and safety of high-titer convalescent plasma compared to a control (5% albumin) in outpatients with early mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 who are at high risk for disease progression.
