Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Convalescent plasma is a biological therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from a specific infection—in this context, SARS-CoV-2. It contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies that can provide passive immunity to patients with active disease. The Fundación Cardiovascular de Colombia (Hospital Internacional de Colombia) initiated a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the clinical response of critically ill adult COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who received 500 ml of ABO-compatible convalescent plasma obtained via apheresis. The primary objective of this institutional program was to establish the impact on 30-day in-hospital mortality and the requirement for mechanical ventilation, particularly in patients experiencing severe systemic inflammatory responses or cytokine storms associated with COVID-19.
