Convalescent plasma (Heinrich-Heine University, Duesseldorf) is a passive immunotherapy product investigated for the treatment of early-stage COVID-19. It consists of blood plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, containing high titers of polyclonal neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies primarily target the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the viral spike protein, effectively neutralizing the virus and preventing its attachment to the host's ACE2 receptors. This specific therapeutic was evaluated in the Phase 2 COV-Cam trial (NCT04321096), a randomized, partly double-blind study led by Heinrich-Heine University, Duesseldorf, which aimed to assess the efficacy of early plasma administration in preventing disease progression among high-risk adult outpatients.
