Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Convalescent plasma is a biological therapy consisting of blood plasma collected from patients who have recovered from COVID-19. This plasma contains high titers of polyclonal antibodies, particularly neutralizing IgG antibodies directed against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and its receptor-binding domain (RBD). By binding to these viral surface proteins, the antibodies neutralize the virus and prevent it from infecting host cells through the ACE2 receptor. Max Healthcare Institute Limited investigated this passive immunotherapy in a Phase II, open-label, randomized controlled trial to evaluate its safety and efficacy in hospitalized adult patients with severe COVID-19.
