Overview

Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. It contains polyclonal antibodies, including neutralizing antibodies that specifically target the SARS-CoV-2 virus, primarily its spike and nucleocapsid proteins. The Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) in Egypt investigated this therapy in Phase 3 clinical trials to treat severe and critically ill COVID-19 patients, focusing on the timing of administration (early versus late). As a form of passive immunotherapy, it aims to reduce viral load and improve clinical outcomes by providing immediate, exogenous antibodies to patients whose own immune systems may not have yet produced a sufficient response.
