Convalescent plasma (University of Illinois at Chicago) is an investigational passive immunotherapy developed for the treatment of COVID-19. It consists of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection and have developed high titers of neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies target the viral spike protein, preventing the virus from binding to and entering host cells, thereby reducing viral replication and modulating the inflammatory response. The University of Illinois at Chicago evaluated this treatment in a Phase 2, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial (NCT04373460) involving hospitalized patients to determine its safety and clinical benefit compared to standard fresh frozen plasma.
