Convalescent plasma-NYU Langone Health-COVID-19 refers to the specific COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) investigated in the CONTAIN COVID-19 trial. This biologic therapy consists of blood plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, containing a diverse pool of polyclonal antibodies that target various viral antigens, most notably the spike protein. Developed by NYU Langone Health in collaboration with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, the therapy was evaluated in a randomized, double-blinded, Phase 2 trial involving 941 hospitalized patients requiring supplemental oxygen. The mechanism of action involves providing passive immunity by neutralizing viral particles and preventing their entry into host cells. Although the trial results published in 2022 did not demonstrate a significant clinical improvement over placebo in the primary study population, the research contributed significantly to the understanding of antibody-based therapies for COVID-19.
