Overview

Convalescent plasma-The Hospital for Sick Children-COVID-19 refers to an investigational passive immunotherapy approach using blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients to treat hospitalized children with the disease. This therapy, evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial sponsored by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), contains high titers of polyclonal antibodies, particularly immunoglobulin G (IgG), that recognize and neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The primary mechanism involves these antibodies binding to the viral spike protein, thereby blocking the virus's ability to enter and infect host cells. In addition to neutralizing antibodies, the plasma provides other immune factors such as complement proteins and cytokines that may assist in the clearance of the virus and modulate the immune response.
