Convalescent plasma-Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia-COVID-19 is an investigational passive immunotherapy developed by the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia for the treatment of hospitalized patients with severe or critical COVID-19. The therapy involves the administration of plasma collected from male donors aged 30 to 60 who have recovered from severe COVID-19 pneumonia. This plasma contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies specifically targeting the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The primary mechanism of action is the neutralization of viral particles, which aims to reduce viral load, accelerate viral clearance, and prevent the progression of the disease. It was evaluated in the PERUCONPLASMA phase IIb randomized clinical trial to assess its impact on 30-day in-hospital mortality and other clinical outcomes.
