COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) is a biologic therapy consisting of the liquid portion of blood collected from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This specific program, sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), was an FDA-authorized expanded access protocol designed to provide experimental treatment for patients with severe or life-threatening COVID-19. The therapy works through passive antibody transfer, where donor antibodies neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus and engage Fc-dependent immune functions, such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and phagocytosis, to clear the infection. The program was a statewide collaborative effort involving UAMS, the Arkansas Department of Health, and regional blood collection organizations to ensure equitable access to the treatment during the early stages of the pandemic when no approved therapies were available.
