Convalescent plasma-University of New Mexico-COVID-19 is an investigational biologic therapy developed by the University of New Mexico for the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The therapy involves the transfusion of plasma collected from individuals who have successfully recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This plasma contains a polyclonal mixture of antibodies, most notably neutralizing antibodies that target the viral spike protein, providing passive immunity to the recipient. By binding to the virus, these antibodies prevent viral entry into host cells and facilitate viral clearance. The University of New Mexico initiated an open-label pilot study (NCT04434131) to evaluate the safety of this treatment and to correlate neutralizing antibody titers in donor plasma with the clinical and immunological response in hospitalized patients.
