Overview

Convalescent plasma-University of Zurich-COVID-19 is an investigational biologic therapy developed by the University of Zurich for the treatment of high-risk hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The therapy involves the intravenous administration of blood plasma obtained from donors who have fully recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This plasma contains high titers of anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies, which provide passive immunization to the recipient. The mechanism of action involves the neutralization of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as the induction of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and phagocytosis to clear the viral load. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial known as the Zurich Protocol (CPT-ZHP), which focused on safety and efficacy in patients with poor prognosis or dyspnea.
