Conventional arsonoliposomes are a class of arsenic-containing liposomal nanoparticles composed of arsonolipids, which are synthetic analogs of phospholipids where the phosphorus atom is replaced by arsenic. These "conventional" versions typically utilize ester bonds to link the alkyl chains to the glycerol backbone. They have been extensively studied in preclinical models for their selective anticancer activity, demonstrating the ability to induce apoptosis in various cancer cell lines, including human prostate cancer (PC-3) and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC), while showing lower toxicity toward normal cells. Their mechanism of action involves the delivery of the arsonolipid monomers to cellular membranes, particularly the mitochondrial membrane, leading to the release of cytochrome c and subsequent cell death.
