Copemyl is a follow-on (generic) version of glatiramer acetate, a non-biologic complex drug (NBCD) used for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It is a synthetic mixture of polypeptides consisting of four naturally occurring amino acids: L-glutamic acid, L-alanine, L-tyrosine, and L-lysine, in a specific molar ratio. Copemyl acts as an immunomodulator; its mechanism involves competing with myelin antigens for binding to MHC class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells and inducing a shift in the T-cell population from pro-inflammatory Th1 cells to anti-inflammatory, glatiramer acetate-specific Th2 cells. These regulatory T cells migrate to the central nervous system and secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing the autoimmune-mediated destruction of the myelin sheath. It was developed as a therapeutic equivalent to the originator product, Copaxone.
